I recall one state, can't remember which one, where the people at the Secretary of State's office that write the notary regulation decided that either a person could do all notarizations for free, or could charge full price to everyone. So if you were a mobile notary, you couldn't quote a flat fee at the time the appointment was made because you wouldn't know how many notarizations were in the package, so you wouldn't know if the total fee would be above your usual fee that includes notarizations, printing, driving, etc.
Also, if you usually charged but you wanted to give a break to the firefighter who had worked the debris pile at the World Trade Center and was submitting a notarized medical form to get related medical benefits, you couldn't. (I did such a notarization, and you can bet I did it for free.) |
