Perhaps someone can 'splain this to me. I went to their website and all I got from it is that they're a platform. No where did I get the impression that Notarize is "the" notary public. My perception is that they will put the hiring party in touch with a notary from their network.
Maybe I haven't had enough coffee this morning. Imo, that company is acting very much like a SS with additional services -- ID verification, document upload, live video connect with notary. Unfortunately, SSs are not regulated.
I'm very much against RON. However, from what I read and imo, I don't think they are violating CA 8227.1.
California does require in-person appearance. Live video is not allowed. California does require the notary to examine and certify to the identity of signer when presented with satisfactory evidence. Imo, someone/something else verifying the ID does not fulfill that requirement. But, these are California requirements for California notaries. Perhaps the other states that have passed RON don't have these requirements. And, as someone else posted, Federal law provides for states to accept notarizations from other states if they are in compliance with the original state's laws.
