At this point, I don't think it will much matter what additional states pass RON. Unless a state prohibits acceptance of a document notarized online (which CA has not done), there's nothing to stop those companies from marketing directly to people anywhere - including California. If the law doesn't pass in any given state, it just means that notaries in that state can't get onboard.
At this point, Notarize might be very happy to not have more states legalize the process by their own notaries, as that would just mean potentially more competition for them. Any signer anywhere, i.e. from any state, can already call into their service to have a document notarized remotely. The only thing passage in more states might do for them is lessen the chance that remotely notarized documents will be legally challenged. |
