I had that happen to me personally when I did a refi many years ago. He had me sign the journal (I can't remember if he got a thumbprint, but I probably would have noticed if he had not), but he didn't sign any notary certificates and I didn't see any sign of a stamp. He was a point & sign notary (which was fine with me) but it later occurred to me that perhaps he wasn't really the notary... That was back in the refi mania days, so who knows what was going on... I was not impressed.
