The Iowa law on debt resolution states a fee cannot be collected in advance of the work being perofrmed. Only after the work has been performed and the client has actually received debt reduction can a fee be collected. The only exception to the Iowa law is that a lawyer licensed in Iowa may collect a fee in advance. Lawyers in other states who are not licensed in Iowa cannot collect fees in advance. Personally, I have never been contacted by an Iowa lawyer to this type of work.
