People who call don't always make it clear who the party is that's going to be responsible for paying us, but WE should be very clear on that before we invest any time into an assignment. If a caller doesn't want to discuss it, or is avoiding answering, that's a red flag to me.

It's possible that they haven't thought about it, because sometimes they just want to make sure there's a notary lined up so they can get THEIR pay. I've received lots of those types of calls from LOs. Usually they just don't have a clue how that part of the process goes, or they don't care. However, we should never feel hesitant to get clarity on that up front. If there's a possibility that a ss is involved, that's even more important.
