Sam mentioned Asian signers, and the custom of removing one's shoes upon entering their home. It's also a custom (particularly Indian signers) to offer a small refreshment, and it's insulting to them if you don't accept it. Even if it's just a bottle of water, thank them and take it with you.

An excellent resource on dealing with different cultures is the book Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands.
