Re: Notary journaling for mortgage signings

Technically, I don't think that's the case. In the General Information section of the CA Handbook, it states that "The certificate of acknowledgment must be filled completely out at the time the notary public’s signature and seal are affixed", which is slightly different, IMO. (I couldn't find any statement to that affect in the Code sections, however, but I might have missed it.) To me, that means that before we add our signature and stamp, all the info in the certificate must be filled out. So that would nix any idea of signing and stamping in the presence of the signers and then filling out the rest later. Wink

But to be clear, I also believe that completing the certificate at the table is a "best practice" and what we should always try to do. Whenever possible, I complete everything but the signature and stamp in advance which makes it easier to do that at the table, and keep the flow going as they sign. Once in a rare while, though, we can run into a situation where one or both the BOs haven't allowed enough time (regardless of what we've told them) and are getting ready to flee, so we know the only way we'll get through everything is to finish it all later. In those cases, if there's any way I can stick around where we are for a few more minutes to wrap it all up, I'll do that.
