Re: genetic test/ oral swab assignment
Posted by LisaKT/CA on 1/30/19 7:10pm

I did one of these assignments about a decade ago thru a SS called Coversign. It was for a paternity test. Had to swab the gums/cheeks of the infant and alleged baby daddy. This was about 10 years ago. I called to confirm the appt and the clients’ expected my call. If I remember correctly, the kit was mailed to me. Whether or not the OP’s assignment was legitimate or a scam is anyone’s guess. However, these mail-away genetic test kits may be quite cost effective for the specific results needed.

Kaiser sends me a home kit test every year and emails me the results. I’m sure they’d call me in for more extensive testing if the test results were of concern. A lot of companies are doing that now with the advancement of medical technology, a simple swab will do and they’ll call the patient in if there’s something of concern. IDK in the OP’s scenario.

Notaries are hired for non-notary related assignments for the same reason they’re hired for loan signings - to ensure that instructions are read, directions are followed, and the paperwork (or products) have not been tampered with, period. Notaries are, by definition, disinterested third parties and are perceived as trustworthy since we are commissioned by our states and in many cases, background checked.

Whether or not any notary chooses to facilitate these genetic test kit assignments is up to them. If during a confirmation call, the person (or their agent) has no clue what I’m talking about, then that’s a red flag to me. However, let’s not - on the forum - pretend like we don’t know why notaries are hired for non-notary related assignments. Again, I have no idea if the OP’s situation was a scam or not.
