In California you can have both an ID and a driver license. I have both. The ID has the same number as the driver license and is issued for 10 years and is free if you are over 60 years old. Driver licenses are issued for five years and can't be renewed by mail after a certain age. If you have an appointment at the DMV the time to get either or both is less than half an hour. About 2 hours if you don't have an appointment.
