It's interesting that if only the minimum information were entered in the journal, the signer's signature was illegible, and the identification was made through credible witnesses (who can't be found) or a foreign passport, it would be a challenge for California authorities to figure out the name of the signer. Police seem to be able to run DMV checks on Canadian licenses easily; I don't know if it's easy to do it for Mexican licenses.
