I absolutely agree that rating on hearsay or second hand info is never appropriate. I believe we each should do our own ratings based on our own direct impressions. And I feel it's helpful to keep in mind that all ratings are going to be subjective, as it's very possible for different people to have had different experiences.
The only caveat I would recommend (and this is just a technicality) is that there are likely some situations where it's appropriate to rate a company we haven't actually worked for IF we've had some direct experience with them. Some examples would include if we've accepted an assignment then had it pulled because they found someone else cheaper, or if they've called us to offer work and were rude or pushy for us to accept a lower fee, etc.
These are things I'd like to know about a company. Otherwise, if all ratings are only written by people who were willing to accept low fees or disrespect, etc., ratings are going to be distorted by coming only from those who don't know better than to avoid the bottom feeders.  There's always a good possibility of that happening anyway, but we don't need it exaggerated by eliminating the opinions of those who personally had a bad experience without actually doing a signing.
