I have had one for many years. No problems. I guess it could be how much you use it. Mine gets sporadic use and appears to be ok. Got mine at Home Depot. If it killed your car battery, even though you have had it since 2006, I would question how it was set up. Having been an automotive Service Director (in a different life) I would question both installation and use.
