Agreed - there has to be a reason for this, and it should be discussed with them. You like the work I am doing and you were happy with my rate, so what has changed?

Obviously, you don't start by negotiating against yourself, but if during that discussion you can't get them to back off their demand you should be prepared to make a concession IF you still want their business.
