I hope that 37 miles is round trip, or you'd actually be losing money on this job. I don't go by actual mileage because I find there are too many variables, but my system is roughly based on mileage. I've calculated (more or less) a series of concentric circles from my home base, roughly about the same width. For each additional "ring", I add $10 to my travel fee.
My county is way too big to have one fee for the whole county (in fact, I don't usually cover the whole county any more), but there are lots of small cities. I can usually quote one price for most of them, but for others, it depends on which end I'm traveling to. I'm also in a very densely populated area that's very saturated with notaries.
Everyone needs to figure out what works for their particular location, but it's best, IMO, to have something that's fairly easy to calculate. For me, dealing in round numbers works much better and people rarely have a problem with it. |
