When did Dan Crenshaw become a spokesperson for the Trump administration? I think I missed that memo.
No, that's not what Trump's promise was - he promised building a wall across the entire southern border that Mexico would pay for. All discussions have to go back to that insane but very real fact - that is what he said he would do.
What he wants to do now is build that wall and have the American taxpayer pay for it.
What Crenshaw is suggesting may make sense, but it is NOT AT ALL what Trump talked about and is STILL talking about. The goal posts keep shifting as Trump and the GOP try to find some way out of the corner he has backed himself into. And it is not what this government shutdown - which has put 800,000 federal workers in financial straits because of a stupid campaign promise - is all about.
Trump stated on national TV that he would be proud to shut down the government unless he got money for his dumb idea, and specifically said he would take the blame for it. But now that it has happened, he wants to blame the Democrats.
Crenshaw's suggestions make sense, but it's important to understand that they do not represent what Trump is asking for. The Dems say they will not come to the table to negotiate until the government is opened, and I agree with that position. There is no reason to hold an entire country hostage over a campaign promise; you cannot hold paying federal workers as leverage to get what you want. Trump thinks this is a real estate deal, where these types of tactics might work. This is not what a real POTUS does. |
