From watching programs like 60 minutes and such, the best security system is a dog (Which you have) and a noisy neighbor. Burglars are in and out way before the police show up if they trip the alarm, they do not care. They are so savvy now they can disconnect or spray paint the cameras. They are sort of like a car alarm, nobody cares anymore if they go off or not, and takes a while for silent alarms, they have to call you first, then dispatch, they are long gone.

The most frequented burglary's are from the hours of 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. people are at work, broad daylight, they look like a repairman and nobody pays attention. They are in and out in a flash, alarm or not.
If you live in the country, geese are a very good watch guards because they start honking as soon as anyone pulls up and invades their space and makes a ton of noise.
The best are neighborhood watches, where the neighbors actually will come out and approach the vehicle, ask questions, just be present. The petty thief doesn't like noisy neighbors and will leave and go to the easier mark.
