Oh by the way...

A signing company calls with a dual signing job. Meaning the wife is signing in one state and the husband is signing in my state. The job is unfortunately a low paying job. I only took it because I'm going to be unable to work for a month due to a surgery in a week.

The problem is, the loan officer is now requesting a bunch of fax backs. At first I told him no, that the low pay I accepted was to only do the signing and Fed X back. Now he's saying he wants about 10 pages faxed, but of course he offers no more money.

What would you do in this case?

What does your confirmation say?

If there are no mention of faxbacks on the confirmation, you have every right to adjust your fee. If he won't budge, walk away. You're not an employee; he's not your boss.

Re: What does your confirmation say?

The confirmation is the original price. I hate being a sucker. I'll probably give him what he wants, but I won't be taking any more jobs from him again.

Here is what I would do...

I would tell them that you accepted for the price and that you won't be able to do it unless they can pay you more. Then tell them, that on the next deal they give you, you'll be sure to do the fax back at the same price. This way, you are sort of getting a next deal (even though it is lower and you will be in surgery) You are putting it back on them.

Re: What does your confirmation say?

You took a low paying job and now you are complaining about a few faxbacks. Charge a fair fee and stick with it. JMHO. Say no to lowballers!

Some of us do not charge for a small # of pages to faxback.

It's your call though. If the fee was ridiculously low in the first place, I don't think I'd go along with accommodating it. It's always our rep. on the line & I always put customer service first.
Like you said, you'd probably do it this time but won't deal with them again. I think that's a good call. :-)

Thank you MW. It's not the lowest price I have ever been offered. If it was, I'd tell him to go jump. This guy gave me the typical response that he will send me more work if I take his price. He can have his price and I will stick to my guns and ask my regular, respectful to other notaries prices.

Everybody runs their biz as they choose, but I find it ironic

that LL devoted more time to this thread than it would have taken her to fax back
10 lousy pages.
If it required a long trip to drop dox after faxing, she could have just told them that she
would have to drop the dox the next day.
Flexibiltiy and the lack of a high horse are as necessary in this biz as a notary stamp.
Sticking to one's guns should not involve shooting oneself in the foot.

Always state clearly what is included in the price.

I quote jobs by pages printed, time, mileage and fax-back pages.

So when I confirm a job for ___ I list exactly what that price includes.

type of job (time)
# of total printed pages
# of miles
# of pages scanned (fax or email)
I then list the prices of each page/mile/etc over the above listed quantity.

This works for me and I have found it to be a easy working model for me. It also gives the SS the option of having the BO come to me and cut out the travel fee, which they LOVE.

It's called the nose of the camel

She's already taken the job at a less than optimum fee, so any future business she gets will start from the premise that she is worth less than an optimum fee. Now the LO is attempting to get even more service for that cut rate. So she's confronted with two possibilities for the future:

1, This is a one-off, so anything she does is going to be basically a gift from someone she'll never hear from again.

2. She gets future business, but only at the sub-par rate she was paid for this job.

No, I don't think she should fax anything without compensation.

Different matter if it was a continuing client, or a job that paid satisfactorily.

Re: It's called the nose of the camel

There are FAX backs and there are Fax backs. If it's a home sale, you know they are going to want a copy of the funds, ID, HUD-1, and maybe a couple more. If it's one of those stupid FAX me everything so I can check your work, then you should charge an extra fee or not bother to work for them. Example FLEX Closings. They are the worst out there. It's all about experience. Once you work for them you'll see how they operate. Give them what they want and make a mental note.

The only thing for sure is, you're going to have surgery and you "need the money". If your Fax machine is broken, would they expect you to pay someone else to fax the Docs back or not accept the assignment? I would not take the assignment, concentrate on getting well and take all my bottles and cans to the recyclers for cash.
