Verizon moving away from unlimited data plans

If you need to upgrade you should do it before 7/7/11.

AT&T is in the process of buying T-mobile.

I just checked with Verizon. My usage is about 1/3 gb/month. Their lowest plan is 2 gb for $30/month which is what I now pay for unlimited. I won't worry about it.

Shoshana, you won't worry about it? You'll be paying the

same thing for 2gb/month vs. unlimited and that doesn't bother you? - to pay every month for less service? I realize 2gb is nothing to sneeze at but still...

However we are moving toward using our phones for more and more data, wireless hotspots (as in running MULTIPLE laptops, tablets, etc from our phone data connection). Who knows how much data we will be using in 2,3, or 5 years. The unlimited plans could be like gold in the future. If one was going to Verizon in the near future, it would behoove one to do so before 7/7/11

You think I am going to be doing this forever? The handwriting is on the wall. I am preparing for other things.

What if you were to understand that pretty soon that phone is going to be more important than that computer you have in your home office. That soon computer will be obsolete and if you don't have a phone, you won't have service? That is the importance of keeping your unlimited data plan if you have it for as long as you possibly can. Then to have as much as you can get for as little as you can pay.

This is the future, it is here, and the rest is coming faster than you care to think about. Oh, you won't in your lifetime need to do this? Fax is obsolete, landlines are going quickly, PCs have run their course too. I could almost guestimate 5-10 years but think, deep down inside, that is high. There are signs.

I actually heard that this was the way of the future...

"...pretty soon that phone is going to be more important than that computer you have in your home office. That soon computer will be obsolete and if you don't have a phone, you won't have service?"

Everything will be done via a smart phone.

The Jetsons used to be my favorite cartoon as a kid...

who knew that someday our phones would resemble exactly those on the cartoon...I thought that was the best!

Do you think we'll ever have flying cars?

I think you're right on target. Reminds me of every computer I've ever bought. Always with more memory (both RAM and hard drive), faster processor, etc. and I'm always thinking it will be way more than I need. But it's never as much as I think it will be because clever people keep thinking of new things to do with all that processing power and memory, and different ways of doing things, not to mention entirely new technologies. It boggles the mind - mine, at least - and I don't see any signs of this pace slowing down.

The way things are done in all other businesses is changing, too. I think we're all going to be hard-pressed to find anything else to do that won't be affected by rapid technological change. Sometimes it exhausts me just thinking about it! Wink

Your phone has basically replaced an entire 1987 office building at this point,

Men have always wanted things bigger, bigger and bigger, until the advent of cell phones. Then the bragging rights went to those with the smallest phone, and so the phones got smaller and smaller and Dick Tracy's phone of choice, the wrist phone, was developed. The first, quite naturally, was crude, but now, after several incarnations:

The tablets are more and more powerful, with eReader from Barnes & Nobel in color that surfs the web and has apps to conpete with Apple's assortment almost.

The ZYPAD is a wristwatch computer which fits on a user's wrist like a bracer and offers interface port features similar to laptop computer.[10] It was developed by Parvus, a military contractor, and Eurotech.[11] It is arguable whether it qualifies as a watch, but it is referred to as a "Wrist Worn PC". It is able to run either Linux or Windows CE, and can sense motion, allowing such possibilities of use such as going into standby mode when a user lowers his/her arm. It can determine its position by dead reckoning as well as via GPS. It supports Bluetooth, IrDA, and WiFi.[10]

How long? Where will it eventually end up? All remains to be seen. With the phone as the biggest communication tool, it is no wonder that that is where it will all reside squarely one day soon - sooner than you think.

Sorry this is not as cohesive as I would want, but have to run - trial begins in a few.
