CT notary witnesses the note.

I have never had to actually needed to sign the note as a witness. Is this something new?

Reply. Witness on Note

Not new, just not common.

As you know, you just sign your name on the witness line, witnessing the borrowers' signature - not the lender (if there is an alonge), not as a notary public.

Only in rare private transaction cases have I seen a Promissory Note that requires an acknowlegment by a notary public or commissioner of the superior court, but it does happen.
