Microsoft Scam in San Luis Obispo County reported

11/14/2013

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. - The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department is warning of an alleged Microsoft scam going on.

A South County woman told authorities after someone called her, claiming to be from Microsoft. That person claimed her computer had viruses and asked for her personal information. Luckily, she did not divulge her information and did not fall victim to it.

Central Coast News spoke to a Santa Maria, CA woman back in May who had a similar experience.

Authorities warn that Microsoft will not call you for this type of transaction.

This could happen any where. BEWARE!

Have an awesome day everyone!

I've heard of a lot of people nationwide that have

received that call - unfortunately some still fall for it.

I get a call about once a month from some asian or middle eastern sounding person claiming to be connected to Microsoft and wanting to connect to my computer to "fix" it. I used to be polite and tell them I was hanging up, now I just hang up.

This has been going on for several years, and the only reason it is still going on is because some people fall for it.

It's a form of what's called "social engineering", which has been used by scammers since at least the 90's to gain access to networks and (now) personal computers.
