SS Email Hacked
Received an email this morning supposedly from a local ss. Was asking for money and involving the Phillipines disaster. I called them to make them aware of it. They told me that their email has been hacked. The letter is so obvious of being a scam.

I got it too. Calling her in a bit to make sure she knows.

Hi Linda, I called right away they are aware everyone is calling. Would be nice to let them know that we know it is not coming from them.

I was just going to post. Was sure it was a scam and didn't
want anyone to send money without checking with Alice first. Unfortunately, when it comes from someone you know, it would be too easy to send money and think later...

This is TOO obvious.
First of all, what ENTIRE signing service has the time and money to take a vacation overseas? Secondly, "everything was fine", until they were robbed? Um, didn't they just have a devastating hurricane? (And who would go on vacation to a place where everyone knows a hurricane is on it's way.) And lastly, all signing services know that notaries are not dumb. (At least, not the Notary Rotary notaries. Maybe XYZ notaries are a different story.) They know that they are always giving us money, and in little dribs and drabs. They know we don't have $1,600 laying around to lend them. So this could only be a fake.
BTW, I have also got this message from other friend's emails of mine saying they were in other far off countries and were robbed. The first time I saw one I though, "What about their family? Why are they calling me for money? And why are they on vacation right NOW? It's not summer or the holidays." I got a hold of them and found out, no, they are working like everyone else. So just saying "heads up", in case you see this message from another one of your friends.

The sad thing about having these scams going around
is when it really does happen nobody believes the victim.
A friend - who is also a Notary Rotary member - recently went to Spain and DID lose her credit and debit cards the first day, was jetlagged and emotionally drained and alone. Wonder what we all would have done if we'd received an email from her saying she was there, lonely, stranded with no money as she'd lost her cards - thanks to these scams we would not have believed it, and only a handful would have investigated further to find out if it was true or not. Most of us would have assumed "she was hacked".

I didn't send entire message. It was a scam, so felt there was no need.

Also, they made it sound real sounding by making it come from someone with the last name as hers.
