Signing Services have to pay $1,000.00 to become an "associate" - I don't recall if that's a one-time fee or an annual fee.

SOOOOO many issue with this...
First, note that anyone joining the SPW *must* be a member of the NNA or work for a company that is a member of the NNA.
It's $1,000 ANNUAL fee for membership. Yes, annual. $1,000 per person per year.
The only members who actually have a VOTE are those who hold regular membership -- those who are or are employees of lenders and title companies. Note that Educators, signing specialists themselves, signing services, companies or entities who provide support to signing specialists, and those who provide background screening services do NOT have a vote. I dare say this might even include Secretary of State offices and other regulatory agencies that provide "support" to notaries. None of the people actually doing any of the WORK have a vote.
And this part: "All SPW membership proceeds are earmarked for SPW meetings and administration."
Translation, the money goes to pay for the fancy conference meeting at the NNA conference and to pay the salaries of the three people who chair the organization -- two of whom work for the NNA.
They know full well that $1,000 a year is completely out of reach for most notaries and probably any of the signing services, too... possibly even some of the education service providers. That's a massive chunk of change, especially for somebody who doesn't even get a VOTE. It's designed to keep the people out and only let a few of the select "big boys" in .
