Working for Slow Payers
I had an interesting conversation with a SS regarding payments to nsa's. When I forwarded comments (all negative), I was told, "if anyone says we don't pay notaries, it's a lie!"
Well, the comments didn't say they weren't paid, only not within a respectable 30 days. If any are working for companies that won't pay for 45-75 days, WHY do you continue working for them?
That fact made it difficult to dispute with the company, that of those posting the negative comments, at least <some> continue to accept assignments. Again, I heard, "If we don't pay notaries, why do they keep working with us?"
It's easy for us to justify our behaviors, skirt the real issues, etc. (how to deny the absence of not one positive comment, though . . . that's brave).
p.s. Are there any VA notaries currently owed $$ ? Feel free to pm

I signed up with Skysail after experiencing a 7 week waiting period to get paid. Granted, some companies won't pay Skysail, but most will, and you get paid on the following Wednesday after the signing.

I received the following email (in regards to me pointing out what was So obvious):
Michelle, Thank you for talking with me this morning. In regard to the Notary Rotary board, and maybe others… I wish the Notary’s that have “positive” experiences, commented as publicly and fast, as the one in three hundred negative ones! Have a great day!
Signing Central should not be taken for granted; it's a powerful ALLY for us - and Information/knowledge is Power. Also, let's not take for granted the good companies who respect those of us in the trenches and who pay fairly and on time!

Tell this SS that is called a 4 and 5 star rating! No need to read the comments when the "stars" are shining by their name

I think "stars" would have gone over their heads (frowns may have been more appropriate)

Thanks for sharing Michelle.
Can you just image posting, " What a wonder appraiser, he/she really was impressed with my snake-pit and self re-tracking garden house".
SS are "suppose" to pay, there is nothing outstanding about doing what you're supposed to do. SS have no "product" and therefore no need to praise the "air" unless you're talking to you-know-who.

This is so fun

I often read notary complains on this board, comparing the behavior of signing services or title companies to the companies we have to pay. Things along the lines of since we can't renegotiate our electric bills after we already use the electricity, signing services shouldn't be able to reduce our fees because they thing we didn't follow one of their made-up rules, that they didn't even tell us about until after the signing.
Suppose we use that reasoning for timely payment. My home heating fuel company sends out bills at the beginning of each month and expects payment by the end of the month. So I if I got a fuel delivery September 1st, and got the bill in the mail October 5th, my payment wouldn't have to arrive until October 31st, about 2 months. So when notaries expect payment within 30 days of the signing, that is a quicker expectation than SOME of the companies that we pay bills to.

Slow payers do not value your service. Period.
I have slowly come around, and as a result, I have dumped a few SSs with no regret.
I wrote it down and put it on the wall: "Slow payers do not value my service. Period."

WE ARE CASH COWS TO SOME COMPANIES
Okay, there are some companies who do value us....without us, especially those who are rock star NSAs, they could not exist without us!
These companies are paid at the close of escrow, mostly.
We get paid, or should get paid, at reasonable turnaround times.
HOWEVER, if business is down, and they don't have the reserves to pay us while they wait for more income, it takes longer.
In these events, we are not valued.
We've all had the lessons learned, companies whose owners slam the door shut when their orders dissipate. We're left empty handed, while they've spent the $$ on themselves, luxurious vacations, etc. you know where I'm going with this!
Perhaps for those who are planning to continue in this business, it is time to weed out the companies who take 45-90 days to pay. Simply, say NO! Let someone else be their financing conduit.

Re: WE ARE CASH COWS TO SOME COMPANIES
I had a contractor go out recently and do some work at my property and I felt TERRIBLE that I couldn't pay him immediately; I even asked if he could delay the work until I had the money. He did the work ahead of time - and I was so grateful. I imagine that if I was a Painter, Plumber, Electrician, etc. and didn't get paid the day my work was finished, we'd have a real problem; and if still unpaid after 60 days, a mechanic's lien would be filed for Sure.
