Summarizing the beginning of Bear900/CAs post, someone else pointed out that heavy use of RON really hurts mobile notaries, and Bear900/CA described that as "a fair issue, perhaps the only REAL issue here."

Obviously the members of this forum would like to keep working in this business, but that's not a reason for lawmakers and regulators to disallow RON, or to pass any other law or regulation. The job of lawmakers and regulators is to keep the public safe, and to the extent possible, make things easy and inexpensive for them.

If RON really turns out to be secure, the main harm to the public I can see is that the number of notaries will seriously decline over time. Not just mobile notaries, but shipping store, in-house and bank notaries too. The person who just arrived from overseas on a visa and needs to get some forms notarized to start his new life? No can do. The police detective needs to swear out an application for a search warrant during an internet outage? No can do. The town that needs to swear in a new mayor because all the internet infrastructure, as well as the old mayor, got washed away in a flood? No can do.
