Before just taking the word of some rando on the internet, from eleven years ago, I would strongly urge you to read the CA Notary Public Handbook where it gives the statute pertaining to Notary Presentments.

Government Code
§ 8208. Protest of bill or note for nonacceptance or nonpayment
The protest of a notary public ACTING IN THE COURSE AND SCOPE OF EMPLOYMENT BY A FINANCIAL INSTITUTION...
(caps mine)

Commercial Code
§ 3505. Protest; Noting for Protest
* * *
(b) A protest is a certificate of dishonor made by a United States consul or vice consul, or a
notary public during THE COURSE AND SCOPE OF EMPLOYMENT BY A FINANCIAL INSTITUTION...
(again, caps mine)

Yes, it is a current law, but it also has parameters that say to me that a Notary Public who is not employed by a financial institution should stay away from these.
