There is a huge difference between acting - deliberately playing a part when everyone knows you're playing a part - and lying on your resume. An actor's job is to try to be someone else; that's not what someone seeking a job should be doing. I don't see how you can even try to make that comparison.
I don't know that it's only a right-wing pattern; I'm sure there are examples of it on both sides of the aisle. None of it should be excused and normalized.
