“Are you saying we need to arm ourselves against the government?”

Yes sir, that is exactly what I am saying.
Don’t know if it was required where you grew up, but in Illinois you could not enter your Junior year in high school without passing a Constitution test. If this was the same in your state, you have obviously forgotten a few points, or missed the day they taught you about The Bill of Rights.)
The first 10 amendments to our FEDERAL Constitution (AKA The Bill of Rights) were written to protect us citizens, and our states from any Tyrannical government that might evolve. They even saw it as our God given duty to rise up if the Fed’s tried to take away any of those freedoms.
So, here is a short list of arms that you can buy and own today!
Why, you can even buy them at auctions held by the Fed’s annually.
Flame thrower
Bazooka
RPG
Tank
Anti-personnel mines (Claymores)
Triton missiles
F-14
If you got the bucks,, you can own them.
Face it, we were outnumbered, under-armed out under financed in our revolutionary war, but we found a way.
Same as Castro in Cuba.
And for a real eye opener, read up on the slave rebellions in the Caribbean, these guys started with nothing but machete’s.
Sorry, but the first ten amendments are there to protect us (and the states) against the federal government.

“During the time of the "Wild West", sheriffs in many towns routinely required citizens to surrender their weapons when they entered town”

Yep, they sure did, but they did not give up ownership of their guns, when they left town, they got em back.
And, that was a local ordinance not the Federal government laying down the law.
