Being an independent contractor doesn't mean SS is free to stiff notaries public, much less fly under the radar screen. In fact its actually questionable as to whether we are "independent contractors" under CA Law! I'd go into great detail but it might put everyone to sleep. Nonetheless, please, please go to every government agency/board, file complaints, write letters, and CALL YOUR LEGISLATIVE representative in your respective state. If we ALL organize as one professional industry, set the standards for work performed, and form a union we would all benefit tremendously.
I recognize Luckydog doesn't think we can unionize because we are "independent contractors" but I can tell you for certain, having been a union organizer in another life, seeing the success of caregivers (independent contractors paid by their individual clients) unionize with one of the largest unions in the state of CA gives me great hope.
