I have avoided Brother printers even though they are attractive from a pricing standpoint (cheap). However, after YEARS of hearing people complain about them here, one would think that it would be good to stay away from them. Personally, I have opted only for HP printers and problems are non-existent. You go to a bank, the they use HP printers (not Brother). The reason is because everything is in the cartridge, and not the main unit. No "drums" or "corona wires" to hassle with. Yes, I know what you're going to say next.
HP printers (I mean good ones) are expensive if you buy them new. I have NEVER bought a new one. I purchase printers turned into HP as trade-ins or purchased back from the government. My last printer (turned in from Kirtland AFB) had 1,231 copies on it in it's entire life. (HP printers keep track of how much they've been used). I bought it for $450 and new it was over $2,300. It was virtually brand new. The HP rep here in town is usually well stocked with used machines. There is hardly anything that needs replacing, save for a new feed roller here or there (they have a replacement kit after about 500,000 copies). I have two dual tray HP P4515's that I've been using for years now.
I use non-OEM cartridges from an outfit in Los Angeles - if anything is wrong with one, I let them know what the problem was and they will rush a replacement to me for free. Sometimes they want the bad one back, sometimes they say just to junk it. If they want it back, they provide a label.
In sum, spend a few dollars more and relieve your headaches.
