"...there is no question that if you're looking for a workhorse for a great price (new purchase), Brother is the solution you seek."
I think that's a pretty bold statement, unless the key operative words are "new purchase". But I think there's another perspective that's well worth consideration. First of all, I think it's a mistake to conflate HP printers with HP computers. I don't think I'd even consider an HP pc from what I've heard and read about them. However, HP was in the printer business long before they ever made their first pc and from everything I've ever heard, their printers have long had great reputations as reliable work horses.
Many of the HP printers used by fellow NSAs are designed for high volume, heavy duty workgroup use. (And after the mortgage meltdown, there were tons of those, gently used, on the market for relatively cheap, because they were very common in bank, lender and title co offices - many of which went out of business. There are still some of those out there.)
The only reason I've ever replaced an HP printer was due to minor issues like a scanner bulb out (with my first mfp), or paper uptake rollers needing to be replaced, or just to have faster performance. These were all after way more than 100k pages printed. I decided to replace vs. having them fixed because I was able to buy good quality used replacements for less than it would cost for a service call and parts. I spent less than I would have for a new Brother of similar print speed and they keep churning out the copies without concern about cleaning or replacing drums.
I'm not saying this is the right answer for everyone. I'm just saying that I don't believe that Brother printers are the right answer "without question", either...
