That's a great take on a difficult situation.
I've had people open up to me in very unexpected ways, and it's sometimes really uncomfortable. I just try to be a good listener and be as supportive as I can, while gently trying to nudge them back to the process of getting the papers signed.
Once, during a purchase closing, the husband saw his credit score disclosure and thought his score was too low. He looked at the 1003 and discovered that his credit card balances were way higher than he thought. As he grilled his wife about each balance, I just sat there trying to blend in to the background.
He had just returned from a military deployment, and she had some explaining to do. Thankfully we were in a public place, so he didn't lose his mind. But I was worried there for a moment.
