They're our 'national representatives' only to the extent they've been able to convince people that they are. 'XYZ' is a for-profit business that advertises itself as representing notaries, but they have absolutely no official authority to do so beyond what they give themselves. The fact that they present themselves as an authority doesn't change the fact that they have none.
A true Association (such as the AMA, NEA, etc.) has a ruling board composed of individuals elected by it's membership. XYZ charges fees, but those who pay for their 'membership' are given no voice in any aspect of how they operate. To be clear, there's nothing wrong with that for a non-public business. They just try to present themselves as otherwise. For the record, they do also run a small non-profit foundation, which I assume is how they have a website with a .org domain, but I've always felt it's inappropriate for them to use it for all their business operations. (It just helps promote the inaccurate assumptions about them, imo.)
