I always find it necessary to break up your thoughts into mini bites, G! I'm just on a less than plane . . . but I think I see (sort of), cuz the OP made me think of using a COPY or DUPLICATE stamp on the "original" certificate to be sure it WAS the same one. But I'm sure that isn't the way to handle. I would just use the little area on a Loose/APA for commenting re: Document title, no. of pages, etc.*
I only questioned OP after seeing her CA colleague's post regarding amending certs in Calif (I believe in response to Your post about marital status verbiage).
Me thinks a Certificate Law course thread might be helpful!
*My All Purpose Ack has space for this, and I have always suspected a qualifier might be useful here - as in the mentioned instance, especially if no certificate LANGUAGE can be changed (I was "stretching" some in my wording revision comments cuz I know it makes WCoast notaries craaazzy)
