Here's how I see it... If it's offered prior to completion of the transaction (especially if there are any potential issues), it could be considered an attempt at a bribe - in which case, I might consider not even completing the notarization, depending on the circumstances.

However, if the business at hand is already done, then it's clearly a sign of appreciation and I see nothing wrong with it. As with most things, this is a guideline, not a hard and fast rule for me, because there can always be exceptions. I think the key is to always use our best judgment to operate within the bounds of integrity and ethics.
