I don't think it was really intended to take off as an industry, but some here have done quite well changing a side gig into something profitable due to hard work and effort, while others made profits marketing the idea. And of course the slow-pay, no-pay crooked middlemen made profits off the backs of susceptible newbies.
IMO, if you want to maintain a side gig part-time it may be the route to go. Even part-time however, requires being available all hours sometimes, and rarely a steady income when loan origination goes down or sideways with so much competition.
Not knocking the business as it is essential. There are many, many, ways to make a decent living with a more regular income and not so much hassle. This business isn't and shouldn't be sold as being for anyone and everyone.
