Out of curiosity, I just did a quick search of posts here about the number of notaries in California. These are unconfirmed (by me), just what someone else reported in a post on this forum, but I'll assume they were pulled from the SOS website. Here's what I found:

2006 - 260,000
2008 - 300,000
2011 - 163,000
2022 - 145,760 [from Cheryl's post above]

The first two years apparently represent the boom years, later followed by the Mortgage Meltdown and the Great Recession. The decline since then has been attributed (by various posted comments) to increased costs of getting a commission, the proctored exam, and required FBI & DOJ background checks. I suspect other factors will add to that going forward...
