The situation with Al Gore was completely different. The recount was triggered because the difference in the vote count between him and Bush was only about 500 votes. Further, Gore probably had good reason to protest the stopping of the recount (which many of his followers wanted him to do), but unlike some others recently, he took the high road and, quickly and publicly, graciously accepted the decision in the interest of supporting the peaceful transfer of power, as had always been the American way up to that point. |
