Label-reading tip: To determine how healthful an item is, don't just subtract the protein from the carb count. Also subtract the fiber count. That will give you a truer picture of the glucose impact on your body. Example, Hawaiian flatbread: Total carbohydrates 21 grams, dietary fiber 6, protein 5. Total effective carbohydrates 10.
