After a couple of days, I decided it wasn't going to work after all. Their user interfaces are both a bit clunky, and figuring out what the newest recordings were wasn't as easy as it was supposed to be, so back to the drawing board.
All these services give you a week to try for free, so I take advantage of that. Today I found a streaming service called Fubo which carries all of the channels I want and has a 30-hour Cloud DVR included for about $55/mo. I was paying about $176/mo for cable TV, so that's still a huge savings. You can record individual shows or an entire series of new episodes for a show, and then delete them after you watch them, which for me makes more sense than the YouTube TV model of just dumping everything and retaining it for 9 months. Their channel guide is better - Fubo's guide covers at least a week of programming, where both YouTube and Philo only showed the next 6 or 7 hours of live programming (which seemed odd to me).
It looks good on paper, but I'll need a few days to see how well it actually works, which is why these free trials are a nice thing to have. I'll let you know if I think it's worth it.
