From what I read, it appears that although he had no underlying conditions, he suffered 2 strokes while in the ICU. I imagine that is somehow related to the amputation. "Underlying conditions" is kind of nebulous - something like 50% of Americans have high blood pressure, which can lead to a stroke in some situations, and not a small number of those are undiagnosed.

Sad story...
