 Google maps talks, just like Waze

No need to keep reading a map - same for MapQuest

Maybe it's location location location?? For me both of these programs/apps have me covered (you're right about the battery drain of Google though -a few hours in I'm tethered to the car charger) Can't speak for the battery drain of MapQuest and I mainly use Google -
