Drivers never get updated unless they are video drivers for gaming, etc. Once the driver is installed, it's there as long as the printer is connected to the computer.
It doesn't matter how new or old the printer is. If you can use after market cartridges, make sure by looking at the printer settings that they are set to NEVER update. As long as you don't update the printer, then HP or other companies that manufacture printers cannot slip in an update through that makes it impossible to use after market inks or cartridges.
In most cases, firmware doesn't have to be updated and as I mentioned, NEVER allow the "automatic" or any other updates into the printer. If you can use after market cartridges now, just make certain none of the printer settings are ever updated.
