It's been a very long time since I researched this, so things may have changed, but this is one reason why I don't ever use debit cards. I read ages ago that you have more protection with credit cards, so that's how I roll. I have no idea if that's still the case, but I've only ever once had an unauthorized charge, on an Amex card - shortly after I used to to try a local toner service, which I have never used again!

I'll never know if it was a coincidence or not, but thankfully, I had no problem having the charge reversed by American Express and never had the problem recur. (Someone bought themselves a nice backyard grill on my card, but used an actual name and address - maybe to have it delivered? Go figure... I hope he got caught.)
