It has always been my understanding that legally docs can always be oversigned but never undersigned. For example: Mortgage said John Doe and they signed John X Doe that is legal but if the Mortgage said John X Doe and was signed John Doe that would be incorrect.
It sound like it was a ruse to get you to go back and fix their mistake but I could be wrong it has been 10 years since I actually worked in Mortgage banking....
