 Just a thought...maybe it's a 'driver update' causing this

I generally print at a low 300 dpi, but can go as high as 1200 dpi (& nobody can see the difference, even tho' you're using 4x the toner). Once, in a 'driver update', the 300 dpi choice just disappeared, leaving only 1200 dpi. I uninstalled the update & restored to previous. 300 dpi is back. MAYBE you can use another driver that doesn't check for OEM cartridge?
