I don't know if a generator creates a power surge, but having a UPS to keep your computer from shutting down immediately is a good idea. Now I have a whole house generator which kicks in automatically 10 seconds after the power fails, and shuts down when power is restored, and haven't had any issues with our computers, internet modems, or other electrical equipment. Before I used a portable gas generator which I connected to a transfer switch which ran most of the house, with the exception of the AC systems.
