If you have an I.D. Protection service to safeguard you credit you may notice they offer you free credit reports and FICO service, as do some banks and credit card companies. All soft-pull.
Digging way back in my memory, I believe if you have an ongoing credit line, that company has permission to check your credit routinely for chances to upgrade your limits. Again, soft-pulls.
On hard-pulls, beside requiring the tri-merge FICO (the middle number) and your credit history & payments, lenders are looking for fraud.
Usually, it's the underwriter who will demand explanations so we get pretty routine in clearing up name differences, address discrepancies, and verifying DOB's. SS#, etc. I suspect this is what they are primarily looking at on your background checks. You'd be surprised at the junk info that's picked up. Everyone should get a free credit report and make sure there isn't incorrect information on there.
