Notary Conference dress ...
Posted by Bobbi in CT of ? on 5/14/05 2:08pm Msg #37809
I am not going this year, but in the past conferences I attended a dress for the last evening is fine. Some wear long dresses, short, day dresses, nice pantsuits - just not jeans or casual wear. Many times the room they hold the dinner in is a little chilly, so bring a shawl or sweater to throw over your shoulders. Last year I had a light, summer shawl that worked fine. Year before I was glad for the suit jacket. Common sense: You will be in a air-conditioned banquet facility so you never know what to expect. If nothing else, you'll want to layer for the meetings (to jacket/sweater/shawl or not will depend on the room). Bring dress shoes for the dinner and comfortable shoes for the seminars or walking around the casinos and Vegas during down time.

Laptop. I always disconnect when I am away. If you need yours, call the hotel direct and ask them if there are in-room connections and is there a charge. Some of the NNA conference hotels had them; some did not (experience from fellow attendees who are permanently attached to their laptop).

Companies may have packages for you to pick up and complete and mail in. Always handy to have a short resume and business card to hand them as you pass by. May be Way TOO CROWDED to do this or people managing table may not be the person that actually reviews the application and approves it. Last year it seemed like there were more vendors SELLING products than companies looking to hire NSAs. Bring plenty of EXTRA business cards to share with other NSAs you make friends with: faster and easier that writing out Emails, phone, etc.

At last year's NNA conference, I met the people with Vital Signings, sign up with them, and did get work from that sign up.

First day you get there, look at your schedule and plan out which seminars you want to attend (unless you are on a specific certificate track). Keep the schedule handy. You may decide after meeting fellow attendees to switch from what you planned to attend to a different seminar ... or take a break from the whole thing to play in Vegas for an hour or two. Every conference my old and new friends and I at lunch break end up going over our "planned" schedules and re-arranging what we will attend and agreeing when there's a time conflict who will attend what and then sharing/swapping what we learned over dinner.

You will enjoy meeting so many people in one place at one time who are in the same industry. Seminar value is based on individual needs. Check out the people who've attended these for 10, 15, 20 years .... it's a lot more for the camraderie than the education (while still being a business expense, save your receipts for everything and, if there's an NNA product you want, take advantage of any discount by purchasing at the conference or, if you can pick the item up, no shipping costs).
