All sides can agree that our immigration laws are archaic and need changing. Birthright citizenship needs to be revised completely since it (14th Amendment) is not being interpreted as intended. BOTH parents must be U.S. citizens - by birth or legally here - then the infant is a U.S. citizen. If one parent is illegal (alien or expired visa) the child is a citizen of the illegal parent's country and BOTH illegal child and parent are immediately deported. The U.S. citizen can exit with them if he/she so chooses.
Make the penalty for an expired visa holder a warrant for their arrest, immediate deportation, and they're barred from reentering the U.S. for 5 years. If your feet are on U.S. soil illegally, NO claim of asylum and you're barred from entering the U.S. for 5 years.
I believe this country would have better success solving the problem of immigration if we start with our own laws and policies first. Remove the incentives for coming here illegally, staying here illegally with expired docs, and heavily penalizing those that do it will solve a lot of the issues at the physical border. JMHO
